Description
A nether portal is a constructed frame of obsidian that is activated to create a gateway between the overworld and the nether. It allows players to travel quickly between dimensions which makes it a core part of long distance travel and of building nether links for fast movement. The portal itself is the purple swirling field that appears inside the obsidian frame and stepping into it will teleport the player to the corresponding nether location or will create a new portal if none exists. Portals are used strategically to create fast travel networks by exploiting the coordinate scaling between worlds. Because the nether has different terrain and hazards players often build safe nether portal rooms that protect them from hostile mobs and from falling or lava hazards when they arrive. Portals are also used in adventure maps and for fun traps and puzzles because the instant dimension change can be part of an encounter. The portal is a non solid block while active and the area around a portal can be dangerous so careful planning and secure construction matter.

How to get Nether Portal
Build a nether portal by creating a vertical frame of obsidian blocks at least four tall and two wide and then activate the frame with a flint and steel to create the portal field. In creative mode you can place the portal block directly from the inventory. Use caution when lighting to avoid nearby fire hazards.
