What is Wet Sponge in Minecraft?

A wet sponge is a yellowish, porous block that is completely saturated with water. It is what a regular sponge becomes after it has absorbed water. Its main purpose is to be the used up state of a sponge. A wet sponge cannot absorb any more water and is essentially useless until it is dried out. Players will collect many wet sponges when they are clearing out large bodies of water for an underwater project. It is a temporary state for a very useful tool, representing a sponge that has done its job and needs to be reset.

How to get Wet Sponge in Minecraft

There are two main ways to get a wet sponge. The first and most common way is to use a dry sponge. When you place a dry sponge in or near water, it will instantly absorb a large amount of water and turn into a wet sponge. You can get dry sponges by finding them in sponge rooms in ocean monuments. The second way to get a wet sponge is to defeat an Elder Guardian. Elder Guardians are the large, boss like mobs that guard ocean monuments. When you defeat one of these powerful enemies, it will always drop one wet sponge.

How to use Wet Sponge in Minecraft

A wet sponge has no direct uses. You cannot use it to absorb more water. Its only purpose is to be dried out so it can be used as a regular sponge again. There are two ways to dry a wet sponge. The first way is to smelt it in a furnace. Place the wet sponge in the top slot of a furnace with some fuel in the bottom slot. The furnace will cook the water out of the sponge, turning it back into a dry sponge. If you place a bucket in the fuel slot while doing this, the bucket will fill with water. The second, and much faster way, is to place the wet sponge in the Nether. The intense heat of the Nether will instantly dry the sponge, creating a small puff of steam.
