What is Budding Amethyst in Minecraft?

Budding amethyst is a very special and rare block that has the magical ability to grow amethyst crystals. It looks similar to a regular block of amethyst, but it has a distinct X shaped crack on each of its faces. This block is the only thing in Minecraft that amethyst clusters can grow on, making it the heart of any amethyst farm. It is a unique block because it cannot be picked up or moved in survival mode, even with a Silk Touch pickaxe. This makes it a permanent, unmovable feature of the world, and a valuable, renewable resource that you must build around rather than take with you.

How to get Budding Amethyst in Minecraft

In survival Minecraft, it is impossible to obtain a budding amethyst block as an item in your inventory. It is designed to be a permanent part of the world that you cannot move. You can find budding amethyst blocks inside amethyst geodes. These are large, spherical structures found deep underground, usually below Y level 70. When you break into a geode, you will see an inner layer of amethyst blocks. Mixed in with these are the budding amethyst blocks, recognizable by the cracks on their sides. If you try to mine a budding amethyst block, even with a Silk Touch pickaxe, it will simply break and drop nothing. The only way to get this block is to switch to creative mode, where you can find it in the creative inventory and place it wherever you like.

How to use Budding Amethyst in Minecraft

The one and only use for a budding amethyst block is to grow amethyst crystals. If a side of a budding amethyst block is exposed to air or water, a small amethyst bud can begin to grow on it. This bud will slowly grow through four stages, eventually becoming a full amethyst cluster. Once the cluster is fully grown, you can harvest it with a pickaxe to get amethyst shards, and a new bud can start growing in its place. Because you cannot move the budding amethyst, you have to build your amethyst farm around the geode you find. You can carefully mine away the surrounding blocks to expose all six faces of the budding amethyst, allowing it to grow clusters on every side and maximizing your shard production.
