What is Furnace in Minecraft?

A furnace is one of the most essential utility blocks in all of Minecraft. It looks like a simple cobblestone oven. Its main purpose is to smelt items, which means using fuel to cook or transform them into something new. Players use a furnace for two main things: cooking raw food to make it more nutritious, and smelting ores like iron and gold into ingots that can be used for crafting powerful gear. The furnace is a key block for progressing in the game, and almost every player will craft one within the first few minutes of starting a new world. It is a symbol of warmth, safety, and technological advancement in your survival journey.

How to get Furnace in Minecraft

The only way to get a furnace is by crafting it. It does not generate naturally in the world, although you can sometimes find one inside the houses of armorer, toolsmith, and weaponsmith villagers. The crafting recipe is very simple and can be made early in the game. You will need eight blocks of cobblestone, cobbled deepslate, or blackstone. You can get cobblestone by mining stone with any pickaxe. Once you have your eight blocks, open a crafting table. Arrange the eight cobblestone blocks in a square around the outside of the grid, leaving the center slot empty. This will create one furnace. You can then place it down and start using it immediately. If you break a furnace with a pickaxe, it will drop as an item, but any items or fuel inside will be lost.

How to use Furnace in Minecraft

To use a furnace, place it down and right click it to open its interface. You will see three slots. The top slot is for the item you want to smelt, like raw chicken or iron ore. The bottom slot is for fuel, like coal, wood, or a bucket of lava. The slot on the right is where the finished product will appear. A single piece of coal can smelt eight items. Once you have an item and fuel in the furnace, it will light up and start working. A small arrow will show the progress. Besides its main function, a furnace can also be used as a job site block for an armorer villager. Placing a furnace near an unemployed villager can turn them into an armorer, who you can trade with for armor.
