What is Ice in Minecraft?
Ice is a transparent, slippery block that forms naturally in cold biomes. Its main purpose is to be a unique block for movement and decoration. The most important property of ice is that it is very slippery. Items and players will slide across its surface with very little friction. This allows players to create super fast transportation systems by building ice roads for boats. Ice is also a transparent block that can be used for building, but it has a major weakness: it will melt into water if there is a light source nearby with a light level of 12 or higher.
How to get Ice in Minecraft
The only way to get an ice block in your inventory is to mine it with a tool that has the Silk Touch enchantment. Ice generates naturally in cold biomes like snowy plains, ice spikes, and frozen oceans, where it covers the surface of lakes and seas. If you break an ice block with a regular tool or your hand, it will just shatter and turn into water (or disappear if there is no block underneath). So, you must use a Silk Touch pickaxe or shovel to collect the ice block itself. You can also find ice in some igloo structures. There is no way to craft ice, you must find it in a cold biome and collect it carefully.
How to use Ice in Minecraft
The most popular use for ice is to create super fast boat roads. If you place a boat on a path made of ice blocks, the boat will travel incredibly fast, much faster than walking or even using a minecart. This is a great way to build a highway system in your world or in the Nether. For building, ice can be used to create beautiful ice castles, sculptures, or frozen windows. However, you must be careful, as it will melt if you place a torch or any other bright light source too close to it, unless you are in the Nether where it melts instantly. You can also craft nine ice blocks together to create one packed ice block, which is not slippery but will not melt.
