What is Echo Shard in Minecraft?

An echo shard is a dark, mysterious item that seems to absorb the light and sounds around it. It is a very rare and valuable crafting ingredient that you can only find in the most dangerous places in the world. Its one and only purpose is to be used to craft a recovery compass, a magical tool that can save you a lot of frustration. Because it is so rare and has such a powerful use, finding an echo shard is a sign of a successful and brave expedition into the deep dark.

How to get Echo Shard in Minecraft

There is only one place in the entire game where you can find an echo shard: inside the chests of an ancient city. Ancient cities are massive, spooky structures that are only found in the deep dark biome, far, far underground. These cities are incredibly dangerous because they are patrolled by the terrifying Warden. You will need to be very sneaky, using wool to muffle your footsteps and avoiding the sculk sensors, to explore an ancient city safely. The chests scattered throughout the city have a high chance, about thirty percent, of containing one to three echo shards. You will need to loot several chests to get enough to craft with.

How to use Echo Shard in Minecraft

The only use for an echo shard is to craft a recovery compass. To do this, you must collect a total of eight echo shards. Once you have them, go to a crafting table and place a regular compass in the very center slot. Then, surround the compass with your eight echo shards, filling every other slot in the 3x3 grid. This will craft the recovery compass. A recovery compass is an incredibly useful tool that will always point to the exact location where you last died. This makes it an amazing item to have for finding and retrieving all your lost gear after an unfortunate death.
