What Is Bedrock in Minecraft?

Bedrock is the hardest block in Minecraft - you cannot break it in Survival mode no matter what tool you use. It forms the very bottom of the Overworld and covers both the top and bottom of the Nether, acting as an unbreakable boundary to the world.

How Does Bedrock Work?

  • No tool can mine it in Survival - its hardness is infinite.
  • It has a blast resistance of 3,600,000 - TNT, creepers and even the Wither cannot destroy it.
  • Pistons cannot push or pull it.
  • In Creative mode you can break it instantly like any other block.

How to Get Bedrock

How to Get Bedrock

  • You cannot obtain Bedrock in Survival mode.
  • In Creative mode, pick-block (middle-click) a bedrock surface, or use /give @s bedrock with cheats enabled.

Where Does Bedrock Generate?

  • Overworld: forms the bottom five layers of the world (Y=-64 to Y=-60 in Java Edition).
  • Nether: lines the top five layers (around Y=127) and the bottom five layers.
  • End: small patches appear on top of End spike pillars and as End gateway frames.

How to Use Bedrock

How to Use Bedrock

  • In Creative or adventure maps, use it as an unbreakable wall, floor or barrier that players cannot dig through.
  • Great for the floors of dungeons or escape rooms where players must not be able to cheat their way out.

Bedrock and the Wither

  • The Wither cannot destroy Bedrock, so you can use it to contain a Wither safely in the Nether.
