What Is Budding Amethyst in Minecraft?

A Budding Amethyst block is the source of all Amethyst Crystal growth. It has a cracked purple surface with a glowing centre cross pattern. Over time it grows Amethyst Buds on its faces, which mature into Amethyst Clusters.

How Does Budding Amethyst Work?

  • It randomly grows Amethyst Buds on any exposed face over time, going through four stages: Small Bud, Medium Bud, Large Bud and Amethyst Cluster.
  • Only the fully grown Amethyst Cluster drops Amethyst Shards when mined.
  • Breaking it with any tool - even Silk Touch - drops nothing. It cannot be moved or collected.
  • It is found only inside Amethyst Geodes, deep underground.

How to Get Budding Amethyst

How to Find Budding Amethyst

  • Found inside Amethyst Geodes, which generate deep underground (typically between Y -58 and Y 30).
  • Geodes have a smooth basalt outer shell, a calcite middle layer and an amethyst inner layer with Budding Amethyst blocks inside.

How to Mine Budding Amethyst

  • It cannot be collected. Breaking it with any tool, including Silk Touch, drops nothing.

Budding Amethyst Trading with Villagers and Wandering Traders

  • Wandering Trader: No
  • Emerald Price: Not stated
  • Villager Trading: No

How to Use Budding Amethyst

Using Budding Amethyst

  • Leave it in place inside the geode and harvest the Amethyst Clusters that grow on its faces for a renewable supply of Amethyst Shards.
  • Build your farm around it - place hoppers or minecarts under it to collect shards automatically as they drop.

Budding Amethyst Tips

  • Each face of the block can grow a bud independently, giving up to 4 clusters at once.
  • Clusters take several in-game days to fully grow - be patient or let the farm run overnight.
  • Mine only the Amethyst Clusters, never the Budding Amethyst itself, or the farm stops producing.
