What Is Cactus in Minecraft?

Cactus is a tall, spiky green plant found in deserts and badlands. It damages anything that touches its sides - making it useful for mob traps. It can also be smelted into Green Dye.

How Does Cactus Work?

  • Any mob or player touching the sides of a cactus takes 1 damage per half-second.
  • It can only be placed on Sand or Red Sand.
  • It grows up to 3 blocks tall naturally. Using Bone Meal does not speed this up.
  • A cactus block will break if a solid block or another block is placed directly beside it.
  • Breaks instantly by hand or any tool, always dropping itself.
  • Items that land on top of a cactus are destroyed.

How to Get Cactus

How to Find Cactus

  • Grows naturally in desert and badlands biomes.

How to Collect Cactus

  • Any tool or your hand works - it always drops itself when broken.
  • Breaking the bottom block of a stack causes all blocks above it to drop as items.

Cactus Trading with Villagers and Wandering Traders

  • Wandering Trader: Yes
  • Emerald Price: 3 emeralds for 1 (Wandering Trader)
  • Villager Trading: No

How to Use Cactus

Using Cactus

  • Smelt it in a Furnace to produce Green Dye (one Cactus = one Green Dye).
  • Build mob traps and grinder funnels using cactus walls to damage mobs.
  • Use it as a natural perimeter fence in desert builds - mobs avoid touching it.
  • Stack it on sand in a farm with water channels to auto-break and collect the drops.

Cactus Tips

  • Items that touch a cactus are destroyed - do not drop items onto it accidentally.
  • A solid block placed next to a cactus will cause it to break and drop, useful for automatic farms.
