What Is Chipped Anvil in Minecraft?

A Chipped Anvil is the second stage of Anvil wear. It works the same as a regular Anvil for renaming items, repairing equipment and applying enchantments - but it is one step closer to breaking entirely.

How Does Chipped Anvil Work?

  • Use it to rename items, repair tools and armour, and combine enchanted books with gear.
  • Each use has a 12% chance to degrade it to a Damaged Anvil.
  • A Damaged Anvil is the final stage before the anvil breaks completely.
  • Falls like a gravity block if there is no block below it, dealing damage to any entity underneath.
  • A pickaxe is required to mine it - breaking without a pickaxe drops nothing.

Using Chipped Anvil

  • Use it the same way as a regular Anvil - rename items, repair gear and apply enchantments.
  • Be aware it is close to breaking - consider repairing or replacing it before it degrades further.

Chipped Anvil Tips

  • Repairing items on an anvil costs experience levels - the more enchantments on an item, the more expensive it gets.
  • You cannot repair an anvil itself - you must craft a new one when it breaks.
