What Is Dirt in Minecraft?

Dirt is one of the most abundant blocks in the game, making up the surface layer of most biomes beneath Grass. It is a basic building material and the foundation for farming and grass spreading.

How Does Dirt Work?

  • Fastest to break with a shovel, but can be broken by hand.
  • Grass can spread onto Dirt if there is light and an adjacent Grass Block.
  • Farmland is created by using a hoe on Dirt.
  • Coarse Dirt does not grow Grass.
