What Is Farmland in Minecraft?

Farmland is tilled soil that most crops need to grow. It is created by right-clicking Dirt, Grass, Coarse Dirt, or Rooted Dirt with a hoe. When hydrated by nearby water it stays moist and dark, allowing crops to grow faster. If you walk on it or land on it from a height, it reverts to Dirt.

How Does Farmland Work?

  • Fastest to break with a shovel, but can also be broken by hand (drops Dirt).
  • Created by using a hoe on Dirt or Grass.
  • Stays hydrated if water is within 4 blocks - hydrated Farmland grows crops faster.
  • Trampling (jumping on it) or placing a block on top converts it back to Dirt.
