What Is Iron Ore in Minecraft?

Iron Ore is one of the most common ore blocks in the Overworld. It appears as stone with tan-coloured mineral veins. Mining it requires a Stone Pickaxe or better. Smelting the raw iron it drops produces Iron Ingots, which are essential for crafting tools, armour and many other items.

How Does Iron Ore Work?

Requires a Stone Pickaxe or better to mine - a Wooden Pickaxe will not drop anything.
Drops Raw Iron when mined (or the block itself with Silk Touch).
Smelt Raw Iron in a Furnace or Blast Furnace to get Iron Ingots.
Found from Y level -64 up to Y level 320, most commonly around Y level 16 and 232.
