What Is Axolotl in Minecraft?

Axolotls are small, friendly amphibians found underwater in Lush Caves. They come in several colors and will fight alongside you against hostile water mobs.

What Can Axolotls Do in Minecraft?

  • Axolotls attack Drowned, Guardians, Elder Guardians, Squid, Glow Squid, and several fish, helping you clear out dangerous water mobs.
  • If you finish off a mob that an Axolotl was fighting, you get the Regeneration effect and lose any Mining Fatigue, as a reward for teaming up with it.
  • When hurt, an Axolotl sometimes plays dead for a few seconds, which makes hostile water mobs ignore it while it slowly heals.
  • Axolotls can survive out of water for about 5 minutes before they start taking damage, and can hop around on land a short distance from the water's edge.
  • Catch one in a Water Bucket to carry it around or move it somewhere else. It won't despawn once you let it back out.

How to Breed Axolotls

  • Feed two Axolotls a Bucket of Tropical Fish to breed them.
  • The baby usually matches one parent's color, but there's a very small chance of getting a rare blue Axolotl instead.

Why Keep Axolotls?

  • They're one of the best allies for fighting underwater, especially against dangerous Guardians.
  • Carrying a bucketed Axolotl with you makes ocean monument raids and underwater exploring much safer.
  • Breeding for the rare blue color is a fun long-term project since the odds are so low.
