What Is Blaze in Minecraft?
The Blaze is a dangerous Nether mob found only inside Nether Fortresses. It hovers in the air and attacks by launching fireballs that set you on fire. Blazes are extremely important to defeat because their Blaze Rods are needed to craft Blaze Powder, which powers the Brewing Stand for making potions.
What Can Blazes Do in Minecraft?
- A Blaze charges up for 3 seconds, then fires three small fireballs one after another. Each fireball lights you on fire for 5 seconds.
- Blazes also have a melee attack if you get within 2 blocks. This melee hit does not set you on fire, so Fire Resistance potions will not protect against it.
- When targeting you, the Blaze floats upward to reach your eye level. It can follow you from over 40 blocks away.
- If you hurt a Blaze, any nearby Blazes that were not already attacking you will immediately start targeting you.
- Water, snowballs, and powder snow all deal damage to Blazes. A single snowball deals 3 HP. Rain also slowly damages them.
- Blazes are completely immune to fire, lava, and fall damage.
How to Fight Blazes
- Bring snowballs! They deal 3 damage each and are very easy to collect. Pack at least a stack before going to a Nether Fortress.
- A Fire Resistance potion will block all fireball damage, but remember the melee attack is not fire damage, so stay out of melee range anyway.
- A shield can block both fireballs and melee attacks. Hold it up while closing in.
- Try to attack from below or behind cover. Blazes rise toward your head, so fighting from lower ground helps.
- Blazes only drop rods when killed by a player or tamed wolf, so avoid letting other mobs finish them off.
How to Stay Safe from Blazes
- Blazes only spawn inside Nether Fortresses, so you will not encounter them in the open Nether unless you are near one.
- Build a shelter of cobblestone or other fire-resistant blocks around the Blaze spawner area before engaging.
- Carry a bucket of water to pour on fires the fireballs start, but remember placing water in the Nether causes it to instantly evaporate unless you are in a very specific spot.
- If you are not ready to fight, avoid the glowing platforms with Nether Brick Fence railings inside fortresses as those are the Blaze spawner spots.
