What Is Cat in Minecraft?

The Cat is a tameable passive mob that spawns near Villages and Swamp Huts. Taming a Cat is very useful because Creepers and Phantoms will run away from any Cat nearby, making them one of the best passive defenses against two of the most annoying mobs in the game. There are 11 different color variants to collect.

What Can Cats Do in Minecraft?

  • Creepers will not come near a Cat, making a tamed Cat around your base one of the best ways to stop Creeper explosions. Phantoms also keep their distance from any Cat, which protects you at night.
  • Stray (untamed) Cats hunt Rabbits and Baby Turtles. Tamed Cats do not hunt.
  • A tamed Cat teleports silently to its owner if they get more than 12 blocks apart, unless the Cat is sitting, in a vehicle, or leashed.
  • After sleeping in a Bed at night, a tamed Cat that was nearby may bring you a morning gift when you wake up: a Rabbit Foot, String, Rotten Flesh, Feather, Raw Chicken, or Phantom Membrane.
  • Tamed Cats like to sit on top of Chests, Beds, and active Furnaces on their own. A Cat sitting on a Chest blocks you from opening it, so watch out for that.
  • Cats can see players who are invisible and will not be fooled by the Invisibility effect.

How to Tame a Cat

  • To tame a stray Cat, hold Raw Cod or Raw Salmon and slowly approach it. Stray Cats are shy and run away if you move too fast. Each fish fed has a 1 in 3 chance to tame it, so be patient and bring several fish.
  • Once tamed, the Cat has a heart collar and follows you everywhere. Right-click a tamed Cat to tell it to sit or stand.
  • Use a Dye on a tamed Cat to give it a matching collar color.

How to Breed Cats

  • Breed two tamed Cats by feeding each one a raw fish. They will produce a Kitten. You must wait 5 minutes before those two Cats can breed again.
  • Kittens look like tiny versions of their parents and take 20 minutes to grow up. Feeding a Kitten raw fish speeds up its growth by 10% each time.

Why Keep Cats?

  • Creepers stay at least 6 blocks away from Cats, and Phantoms stay 16 blocks away.
  • After you sleep, a tamed Cat often leaves you a gift, such as a Rabbit's Foot, Rabbit Hide, String, Feather, Raw Chicken, or even a rare Phantom Membrane.
  • Feed a tamed Cat Raw Cod or Raw Salmon to heal it.
