What Is Cave Spider in Minecraft?

The Cave Spider is a smaller, more dangerous cousin of the regular Spider. It is most often found inside Mineshafts near spawners, and its bite carries a nasty Poison effect that keeps hurting you even after it stops attacking. Its tiny size lets it squeeze through gaps a normal mob could never fit through.

What Can Cave Spiders Do in Minecraft?

  • A Cave Spider's bite poisons you on Normal and Hard difficulty. The poison ticks away extra damage for several seconds after the bite, though it will never drop you below half a heart.
  • Cave Spiders are much smaller than regular Spiders, which lets them fit through 1 block wide, half a block tall gaps that would stop almost anything else.
  • Like regular Spiders, Cave Spiders only attack you first in low light or at night. In bright light, they wander around peacefully unless you hit them.
  • They are completely immune to cobwebs and cannot be poisoned themselves.
  • An Armadillo that is not rolled into its shell will scare a Cave Spider away.

How to Fight Cave Spiders

  • Bring Milk or a Honey Bottle to cure the poison effect quickly if you get bitten.
  • A sword enchanted with Bane of Arthropods deals bonus damage to Cave Spiders, making fights much faster.
  • Try to fight them in open areas rather than tight mineshaft corridors, since their small hitbox makes them hard to hit at close range in cramped spaces.
  • Watch for Cave Spider spawners, usually surrounded by cobwebs in Mineshafts. Breaking the spawner stops them appearing there for good.

How to Stay Safe from Cave Spiders

  • Light up Mineshaft corridors with torches as you explore to stop new Cave Spiders from spawning nearby.
  • Cobwebs slow you down a lot in a fight, so try to clear them with Shears before engaging near a spawner.
  • Keep an Armadillo nearby if you can. It will scare off Cave Spiders as long as it is not curled up.
  • Back away into a wider space if you get swarmed, since their small size makes them easy to lose track of in tight corners.
