What Is Chicken in Minecraft?
The Chicken is a common passive mob found across grassy biomes. It is one of the easiest animals to farm since it lays eggs on its own, and throwing those eggs even has a small chance of hatching a new chick. Chickens are a reliable source of food and feathers for arrows.
What Can Chickens Do in Minecraft?
- A Chicken lays an Egg roughly every 5 to 10 minutes as long as it's in a loaded part of the world. You can throw these eggs, and there's a small chance each one hatches into a baby chick.
- Chickens never take fall damage. They flap their wings to glide gently down from any height instead of falling normally.
- In Java Edition, a baby Zombie can sometimes ride a nearby Chicken, creating a dangerous little "chicken jockey" that moves fast and attacks you.
- The color of chicken that spawns depends on the biome's temperature: warm biomes produce chickens that lay brown eggs, and cold biomes produce chickens that lay blue eggs.
- Chickens avoid jumping off ledges taller than a few blocks and will wander away from large drops on their own.
How to Breed Chickens
- Feed a Chicken wheat seeds, beetroot seeds, melon seeds, or pumpkin seeds to put it into love mode for breeding.
- Because Chickens lay eggs that can hatch into new chicks when thrown, you can actually grow a flock without breeding at all.
- Chicks take 20 minutes to grow into adults, and feeding them seeds speeds up their growth.
Why Keep Chickens?
- A simple Chicken farm is one of the easiest renewable food sources in the game, since you get a steady supply of eggs and can cook the meat for food.
- Feathers from Chickens are needed for crafting Arrows.
