What Is Creeper in Minecraft?

Creepers are silent, green, hostile mobs that sneak up on players and explode after a short fuse. They deal heavy damage and can destroy blocks and builds.

What Can Creepers Do in Minecraft?

  • A Creeper flashes white and hisses for about 1.5 seconds before exploding once it is close enough to a player, but only if it has a clear line of sight to you the whole time.
  • Moving away during the fuse time can stop the explosion from happening at all. You need to get about 7 blocks away, or break the Creeper's line of sight, or knock it back.
  • Creepers deal far more damage and leave bigger craters on Hard difficulty than on Easy.
  • If lightning strikes near a Creeper, it becomes a Charged Creeper with a much bigger, more powerful explosion.
  • Cats and ocelots scare Creepers away from up to 6 blocks, and Creepers move faster when fleeing than when chasing you.
  • Creepers have no footstep sounds, so you usually won't hear one coming until it starts hissing right next to you.
  • Using Flint and Steel on a Creeper forces it to explode immediately.
  • If a Creeper takes fall damage, that adds extra time to its fuse, so one that drops on you from a height can go off faster than expected.
  • Creepers can swim and climb ladders and vines, so water and walls alone won't always stop one from reaching you.

How to Fight Creepers

  • Attacking from a distance with a bow is much safer than approaching with a sword.
  • Walls and fences around your base stop Creepers from reaching your builds.
  • If one starts hissing right next to you, running away immediately is usually your best option.
  • Keeping a cat or ocelot nearby is one of the best ways to keep Creepers away from your base entirely.

How to Stay Safe from Creepers

  • Creepers need total darkness to spawn, so Torches around your base and along paths stop them from appearing there.
  • Keep a cat or ocelot nearby. Creepers flee from them on sight, which is one of the best ways to protect a base.
  • Build fences or walls around your builds. A Creeper can't explode next to something it can't reach.
  • Keep paths and entrances well lit and open so you can spot a Creeper, and hear its hiss, before it gets close enough to explode.
