What Is Dolphin in Minecraft?

The Dolphin is a friendly ocean mob that can actually help you explore. Swim near one and you'll get a speed boost that makes swimming much faster. Feed it raw fish and it will lead you straight to hidden shipwrecks or ocean ruins, making it a great companion for ocean exploring.

What Can Dolphins Do in Minecraft?

  • Swimming near a Dolphin gives you a speed boost called Dolphin's Grace, making you swim much faster for several seconds.
  • Feed a Dolphin Raw Cod, Raw Salmon, Tropical Fish, or Pufferfish and it will swim ahead of you, leading the way to the nearest shipwreck or ocean ruin.
  • Dolphins travel in pods. If you attack one, the whole group turns hostile and fights back together.
  • Dolphins can grab items floating in the water nearby and carry them around.
  • They steer clear of Guardians and Elder Guardians, avoiding ocean monuments on their own.
  • Out of water, a Dolphin can survive for about 2 minutes before it starts taking damage, and it needs air again after about 4 minutes fully submerged.

How to Fight Dolphins

  • Avoid attacking a Dolphin unless necessary. Hurting one makes every Dolphin in the pod attack you at once.
  • If you must fight, try to separate one Dolphin from its pod first so you don't get swarmed.

How to Stay Safe from Dolphins

  • Keep your distance from a pod of Dolphins if you don't want to risk accidentally angering them in a crowded fight.
  • Since the whole pod retaliates together, it's best to just enjoy the speed boost and treasure hunting rather than provoking them.
