What Is Enderman in Minecraft?
Endermen are tall, black, neutral mobs that teleport and only attack if provoked by direct eye contact or an attack. They are needed for Ender Pearls, which are essential for reaching the End.
What Can Endermen Do in Minecraft?
- Staring at an Enderman's face for about a quarter of a second provokes it, even from far away, unless something solid is blocking your view. Wearing a Carved Pumpkin stops this from happening.
- Looking at its body or feet instead does not provoke it, which is a safe way to approach for a sneak attack.
- Once provoked, an Enderman screams, opens its mouth, and chases you, moving faster than usual.
- If you stare at an already-angry Enderman up close, it freezes in place as long as you keep looking at it, but it teleports away the moment you get too close.
- Endermen teleport to dodge attacks or close the distance to you, and they can teleport up to 32 blocks away in any direction when wandering freely.
- Water hurts Endermen, and so does rain. An Enderman caught in rain keeps teleporting over and over until it finds a dry, covered spot.
- They don't burn in sunlight, but bright daylight makes them randomly teleport away, usually ending up somewhere darker like a cave.
- Endermen pick up and place certain blocks, occasionally rearranging terrain in both the Overworld and the End.
- They're the only mob that spawns naturally in all three dimensions, though the End is their home turf and where you'll see the most of them.
How to Get Ender Pearls from Endermen
- Hunting Endermen at night in the Overworld is the main way to collect Ender Pearls before reaching the End.
- Each Enderman has a chance to drop one Ender Pearl when killed.
- Looking at their feet while attacking keeps them from teleporting away mid-fight.
- A Potion of Water or a Splash Water Bottle thrown at an Enderman hurts it, which can help finish one off safely.
How to Stay Safe from Endermen
- Avoid looking directly at an Enderman's face, especially up close. Looking at its body or feet instead won't provoke it.
- Wearing a Carved Pumpkin on your head stops Endermen from becoming angry just from eye contact, though it blocks most of your view too.
- If one is already chasing you, standing in water or rain hurts it and can even make it teleport away to escape.
- Build your base with a low roof or overhangs. Endermen are too tall to fit through many normal entrances, which keeps them out.
How to Fight Endermen
- An Enderman has 20 hearts of health and hits for 3.5 hearts on Normal difficulty, or 5.25 hearts on Hard.
- It teleports away from most arrows and other projectiles, so a sword is the best weapon.
- Water and rain hurt Endermen, so fighting one beside water gives you an advantage.
- Wear a Carved Pumpkin on your head so Endermen don't get angry when you look at them. That way you choose when a fight starts.
- Use a sword with Looting to get more Ender Pearls. Looting III raises the drop to as many as 4 pearls.
