What Is Sheep in Minecraft?

Sheep are fluffy, passive mobs that provide a renewable source of Wool for building and decorating.

What Can Sheep Do in Minecraft?

  • Sheep wander in small flocks, grazing on short grass and ferns, which regrows their Wool over time after shearing.
  • Using Shears on a Sheep gives 1 to 3 Wool without harming it. A sheared Sheep only grows its Wool back after it eats grass again, so it needs something to graze on.
  • Sheep can be dyed any of the 16 Minecraft colors by applying dye directly to them.
  • A Sheep named "jeb_" using a Name Tag constantly cycles through every Wool color as a fun visual effect, though its Wool still drops a solid color if sheared.

How to Breed Sheep

  • Feed a Sheep Wheat to put it into love mode for breeding.
  • Baby Sheep take about 20 minutes to grow up, and babies grow faster the more they graze on grass.
  • A baby Sheep's Wool color is randomly picked from its parents' colors, with a small chance of mixing into a new shade.

Why Keep Sheep?

  • Shearing instead of killing gives you a renewable Wool supply for Beds, Banners, and building.
  • Dyeing a flock different colors is a simple way to get colored Wool without needing separate dye-on-block crafting each time.
  • Keeping grass nearby for your flock to graze is the key to a steady Wool supply.
