Spider

What Is Spider in Minecraft?

Spiders are fast, climbing mobs that are neutral in daylight but turn hostile at night or in the dark. They can climb straight up walls, making them tricky to escape.

What Can Spiders Do in Minecraft?

• A Spider stays hostile as long as the light right around it is dim. If it chases you into a bright area, it calms back down to neutral, unless it already landed a hit on you first.
• Once a Spider has actually attacked you, it keeps chasing no matter how bright it gets.
• They can see and detect you from up to 16 blocks away, even through walls while chasing.
• Spiders climb straight up any solid block, including walls, though they can't climb across the underside of a block. They can even climb soul sand, boats, and Shulkers.
• They squeeze through gaps a single block tall and can get stuck climbing in tight corners.
• Spiders are immune to the Poison effect, so poison attacks won't slow them down.
• They don't make footstep sounds, so you usually won't hear one coming until it's close.
• Their eyes glow red, which can help you spot one in the dark before it spots you.

How to Fight Spiders

• Fighting in an open, well-lit area keeps them from sneaking up through dark corners.
• A sword with sweeping attacks can hit a Spider along with its allies if several show up together.
• Sealing up 1-block gaps in your base keeps Spiders from climbing inside.
• An enchant called Bane of Arthropods deals extra damage to Spiders and slows them down.

How to Stay Safe from Spiders

• Spiders are only hostile in light level 11 or lower, so light up your base and paths with torches.
• They can climb walls, but not upside down. An overhang along the top of your walls keeps them out.
• About 1 in 100 Spiders spawn with a Skeleton riding them, called a spider jockey, so watch for arrows too.
• Bane of Arthropods does extra damage to Spiders.
