What Is Villager in Minecraft?
Villagers are passive mobs that live in villages, work at job sites, and trade useful items with players through Emeralds.
What Can Villagers Do in Minecraft?
- Villagers claim beds to sleep in and job site blocks to work at, which gives them a profession such as Farmer or Librarian.
- Each profession offers its own set of trades, and trading repeatedly unlocks better prices and new trade tiers. Working villagers also restock their trades twice a day at their job site.
- Villagers remember how you treat them. Trading and curing a Zombie Villager earns good reputation, while attacking them earns bad reputation, which can eventually turn nearby Iron Golems hostile toward you.
- Groups of Villagers can summon an Iron Golem to defend their village when enough of them are panicking from nearby danger.
- Villagers flee from Zombies, Husks, Drowned, and Illagers, and hide inside houses with a door and a bed during raids.
- Zombies can infect Villagers on Hard difficulty, turning them into Zombie Villagers that need to be cured with a Golden Apple and a Weakness potion.
- Villagers never despawn on their own.
How to Breed Villagers
- Villagers breed using a shared food stock for the whole village, not food you hand to one directly. Throwing Bread, Carrots, Potatoes, or Beetroot near them lets them pick it up and add it to that stock.
- Bread is worth 4 nutrition points, while Carrots, Potatoes, and Beetroot are each worth 1. A Villager needs the village's stock to reach 12 nutrition points before it's willing to breed.
- Breeding also needs a free, unclaimed Bed nearby for the baby to use. The game searches a wide area, roughly 48 blocks, for one.
- After two Villagers breed, both need to wait about 5 minutes and the village needs to collect enough food again before another breeding can happen.
- Employed Villagers don't breed during their working hours. Unemployed Villagers and Nitwits can breed any time of day.
- A baby Villager takes about 20 minutes to grow into an adult.
How to Trade with Villagers
- Right-click a Villager to open its trade menu and exchange Emeralds for items or vice versa.
- Giving a Villager a job site block, like a Lectern for a Librarian, assigns that profession if it doesn't already have one.
- Keeping Villagers safe behind walls and well-lit areas protects them from Zombies at night.
- A Villager that has traded with you keeps its profession for good, even if its workstation is removed later.
