What Is Zombie in Minecraft?

Zombies are slow, green, hostile mobs that shamble toward players and attack with a bite. They are one of the most common mobs in the Overworld and spawn in large groups at night or in dark caves.

What Can Zombies Do in Minecraft?

  • Zombies can detect and chase players from up to 35 blocks away, and they take the shortest path toward you, going around lava, fire, and cactus where they can.
  • On Hard difficulty, a Zombie can break through a wooden door given enough time, usually around 10 seconds. It can only break the top half, so standing behind the bottom half won't stop a determined Zombie forever.
  • If a Zombie hits a Villager, it can convert it into a Zombie Villager. This happens half the time on Normal and always on Hard.
  • A damaged Zombie can call nearby Zombies over to help, and on Hard they sometimes summon extra reinforcements.
  • Zombies burn in direct sunlight unless they are wearing a helmet or standing in water or shade. A burning Zombie can set you on fire too if it hits you.
  • If a Zombie's head stays underwater for 30 seconds, it starts shaking and turns into a Drowned about 15 seconds later. Once it starts shaking, nothing can stop the change.
  • Zombies hunt down Turtle Eggs within 24 blocks and jump on them until they break, so eggs near a swamp or beach base are at risk.
  • They attack Iron Golems on sight within 42 blocks, but leave Snow Golems alone unless attacked first.
  • Zombies can pick up items and weapons they find on the ground, including better gear than what they're holding.

How to Fight Zombies

  • A sword or axe kills a Zombie in a few hits, and a single hit from an enchanted weapon can kill one outright.
  • Fighting in open spaces is safer than in tight corridors, where a whole group can corner you.
  • Zombies sink in water and cannot swim up to attack you, so water is a safe escape.
  • A strong door matters if you are building a base, since Zombies can break through wooden ones on Hard difficulty.
  • Large groups of Zombies, sometimes up to 20 at once, can spawn near a village at midnight. Keep villages well lit and fenced to protect the Villagers inside.

How to Stay Safe from Zombies

  • Zombies need total darkness to spawn, so placing Torches around your base and along paths stops them from appearing there in the first place.
  • Build fences or walls around your base. Zombies can't jump over most fences, which keeps them from wandering in.
  • Use a strong door, or close your doors at night. Zombies can break through wooden doors on Hard difficulty given enough time.
  • Sleeping in a Bed skips the night entirely, which is the simplest way to avoid Zombies altogether.
