What Is Basalt in Minecraft?

Basalt is a dark, striped volcanic stone that generates in the Nether. It forms tall pillars in soul sand valleys and makes up most of the terrain in basalt delta biomes. You can also make it yourself when lava flows over soul soil next to blue ice!

How Does Basalt Work?

  • It orients like a log - place it on its side to show the stripes running horizontally.
  • Craft 4 Basalt in a 2×2 grid to make Polished Basalt.
  • Smelt Basalt in a Furnace to make Smooth Basalt.
  • Blast resistance is 4.2 - it is reasonably tough but not explosion-proof.

How to Get Basalt

How to Mine Basalt

  • Use any pickaxe - a wooden pickaxe or better is required. Breaking it without a pickaxe drops nothing.
  • Found in soul sand valley biomes as tall pillars, and all over basalt delta biomes.
  • Also generates in bastion remnants.

How to Make Basalt

  • When lava flows onto soul soil that is directly next to blue ice, the lava turns into basalt - a renewable source!

Basalt Trading with Villagers and Wandering Traders

  • Wandering Trader: No
  • Emerald Price: Not stated
  • Villager Trading: No

How to Use Basalt

What Can You Craft with Basalt?

  • Polished Basalt - craft 4 Basalt in a 2×2 crafting grid, or use a stonecutter.
  • Smooth Basalt - smelt Basalt in a Furnace.

Building with Basalt

  • Great for dark, dramatic builds - the natural pillar shape makes it perfect for gothic or volcanic themes.
  • Mix with Polished Basalt and Smooth Basalt for varied textures.
  • Its striped texture looks great placed on its side for horizontal bands.
