What Is Ice in Minecraft?

Ice is a slippery, semi-transparent block found naturally in frozen biomes. Players and mobs slide on its surface. It melts into water when exposed to bright light (light level 12 or above) unless it is in a cold biome or the Nether. Breaking it without Silk Touch creates a water source block.

How Does Ice Work?

  • Very slippery - players and mobs slide across the surface.
  • Melts into water near bright light sources in non-cold biomes.
  • Breaking without Silk Touch creates a water source block.
  • Can be used to create fast water-based item transport systems.

How to Get Ice

How to Collect Ice

  • Use any tool with Silk Touch to collect it as a block. Breaking without Silk Touch creates water instead.
  • Found naturally in Frozen Ocean, Frozen River, Snowy Plains and other cold biomes.

Ice Trading with Villagers and Wandering Traders

  • Wandering Trader: No
  • Emerald Price: Not stated
  • Villager Trading: No

How to Use Ice

Building with Ice

  • Use as a slippery floor for fast sliding corridors or racing tracks.
  • Break without Silk Touch to create a water source block in dry locations.
  • Combine with Blue Ice and Packed Ice for faster sliding surfaces.
