What Is Obsidian in Minecraft?

Obsidian is a very hard, dark purple-black block that forms when water flows over a lava source block. It has extremely high blast resistance, making it one of the best explosion-proof building materials. It takes about 9.4 seconds to mine even with a Diamond Pickaxe.

How Does Obsidian Work?

One of the most blast-resistant blocks in the game.
Can only be mined with a Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe.
Forms when water contacts a lava source block.
Required for building Nether Portals (minimum 10 blocks per portal frame).

Build Nether Portals by arranging a minimum 4x5 frame of Obsidian and lighting it.
