What Is Anvil in Minecraft?

An Anvil is a heavy iron block you can use to repair gear, rename items and combine enchanted books - all without losing your enchantments!

How Does Anvil Work?

  • Each use has a 12% chance of chipping it. On average it lasts about 25 uses before it breaks completely.
  • If it falls from a height it can land on mobs and players, dealing damage (2 hearts per block fallen after the first).
  • It's nearly explosion-proof, with a blast resistance of 1,200 - same as an Obsidian wall.

How to Use Anvil

How to Repair Items with Anvil

  • Put two identical items in and it combines their durability, plus a little bonus.
  • Or put the item and its base material (e.g. diamonds for diamond tools) to repair it.

How to Rename Items with Anvil

  • Put any item in the left slot and type a new name - costs just 1 level.

How to Combine Enchantments with Anvil

  • Put an enchanted book in the right slot to add its enchantment to a tool or weapon.
  • You can also combine two items of the same type to merge their enchantments together.

Watch Your Level Costs!

  • Once a repair costs more than 39 levels, the Anvil will refuse it.
  • Each time you use an item on the Anvil, future repairs on that item get more expensive.
