What Is Bookshelf in Minecraft?

A Bookshelf is a wooden block filled with books. It looks great in libraries and studies, and it has an important gameplay purpose: placing Bookshelves near an Enchanting Table unlocks higher-level enchantments.

How Does Bookshelf Work?

  • Place it within 2 blocks of an Enchanting Table (with a clear line of sight and no blocks in between) to increase the available enchantment levels.
  • You need 15 Bookshelves around an Enchanting Table to reach the maximum level 30 enchantments.
  • Breaking it without Silk Touch drops 3 Books, not the block itself.
  • An axe breaks it fastest.
  • Flammable - fire can spread from it.

How to Get Bookshelf

How to Collect Bookshelf

  • Use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch to get the block itself back.
  • Breaking without Silk Touch drops 3 Books instead.
  • Also found in village libraries and stronghold libraries.

Bookshelf Trading with Villagers and Wandering Traders

  • Wandering Trader: No
  • Emerald Price: 9 emeralds for 1 (Librarian)
  • Villager Trading: Lectern Librarian

How to Use Bookshelf

Using Bookshelf

  • Surround an Enchanting Table with up to 15 Bookshelves (within 2 blocks, line of sight clear) to unlock level 30 enchantments.
  • Use it as a decorative block in libraries, studies and homes.

Bookshelf Tips

  • The 15 bookshelves must have no blocks between them and the Enchanting Table - even a torch or carpet will block the boost from that shelf.
  • Each bookshelf adds 2 levels to the maximum available enchantment, up to the cap of 30.
