What Is Chest in Minecraft?

A Chest is the fundamental storage block in Minecraft. It holds 27 item slots and can be placed next to another chest to form a Double Chest with 54 slots.

How Does Chest Work?

  • Right-click to open and store or retrieve items.
  • Place two Chests side by side to create a Double Chest with 54 storage slots.
  • Chests cannot be opened if a solid opaque block is directly above them (except transparent blocks like glass, slabs or stairs).
  • Cats sitting on a chest also prevent it from opening.
  • An axe is the fastest tool for breaking it.
  • When broken, the chest drops as an item along with all its contents.

How to Get Chest

How to Break Chest

  • Use any axe for the fastest break. The chest and all its contents drop as items when broken.
  • Also found in many generated structures: dungeons, villages, shipwrecks, temples and more.

Chest Trading with Villagers and Wandering Traders

  • Wandering Trader: No
  • Emerald Price: Not stated
  • Villager Trading: No

How to Use Chest

Using Chest

  • Use it to store items at your base - pair chests with item frames and signs to label them.
  • Combine two into a Double Chest for 54 slots of storage.
  • Connect chests to Hoppers to automatically fill or empty them.
  • Combine with a Shulker Box to make portable storage for moving large amounts of items.

Chest Tips

  • A chest cannot open if there is a solid block directly above it - use a slab or glass if space is tight.
  • Trapped Chests look the same but emit a redstone signal when opened - great for traps or secret doors.
  • Ender Chests give personal storage accessible from anywhere in the world.
